WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
We don't have RE lessons all day! We have a balanced curriculum, and the children have access to a rich range of extra-curricular activities. Children are learning the same key skills and facts that they would be learning in any other setting (for more about the curriculum and academic standards, see below). But the teaching is approached from a different perspective. Nursery Class
1. Christian Worldview

Every person alive has a "worldview", their own perspective on what is true and why things happen. The worldview currently prevalent in society is that there are no absolutes in terms of beliefs or values, that God - if he or it exists - can be defined in whatever way we choose, that we can improve ourselves and society through our own wisdom and effort. It can be an appealing philosophy. Sadly, its fruits are not so appealing. Far from being a healthy society, Britain has significant problems with violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, family breakdown, teenage pregnancy, personal debt and suicide.

At ECS we hold a different worldview. We believe that God exists, that he is both loving and just and that he is knowable. We believe that the Bible is as vibrant and relevant today as it ever was. Not only is its moral teaching second to none; it is also a channel though which we learn about and encounter God himself. We believe that Jesus lived in history, that he died, rose from the dead, and is both role model and saviour. We believe that the natural world reveals the beauty and order of God our creator. We aim always to avoid religious legalism or other-worldly escapism. Rather, as we learn about God's world we have a sense both of wonder and gratitude, and of our responsibilities to engage in it by living upright, generous, outward-looking lives. God gave us our minds, and the children also learn that they need to think for themselves, and not accept uncritically everything they hear or read.

2. Prayer

The school's name means "God with us". Through prayer, we ask for God's help, guidance and blessing in every area of school life. Those parents who wish can meet together regularly to pray for the school, and staff pray together in the mornings for the day ahead. In assemblies and their classes, children learn that they can give thanks to God for good things, and can ask for his help when they are worried or in difficulty. This prayerful foundation undoubtedly contributes to the very special atmosphere of the school.
